Corn Dolly

Corn Dollies are a form of straw work, typically wheat, oats or barley. Traditionally created at the end of the harvest season, these traditional ornaments, have deep Pagan & agricultural roots, especially in European folklore & are a symbol of good luck & fertility, believed to bring prosperity to the land & its people.
Primarily a symbol of the harvest, they are used to thank Mother Earth for her bounty & represent the end of the harvesting season. They are believed to embody the Spirit of the corn or grain, ensuring the continuation of the harvest in the following year. Often kept indoors throughout the Winter to ‘shelter’ the spirit of the grain until the next sowing season; the dolly was then returned to the fields in the Spring (buried, burned or ploughed into the soil) to return the Spirit to the Earth & ensure a good crop.

Symbolic places to put your Corn Dolly;                           * Kitchen/hearth-this is the most traditional spots as it is seen as the heart of the home & closely linked to nourishment & the harvest.                                               * Above the doorway-offers protection to the household.                                                                         * On a mantelpiece or wall-as a decorative & symbolic object.                                                                                  * On your Alter-during harvest festivals (Lammas/Lugnasadh) to bless the harvest & honour the grain spirit.
